I’m often asked…how do you handle the desert heat during the summer in Scottsdale, Arizona? Surviving triple-digit summers can be tough and you never really get use to them. At 118 degrees Saturday afternoon July 2, Phoenix saw its hottest day of the year so far, trumping earlier forecasts and setting a new record from a decade ago, according to the National Weather Service. No denying it was just plain HOT. Ah, but Saturday also marked the first day of monsoon activity.
No matter how many tank tops you own, smoothies you sip or dips in the pool it’s a scorching heat. The best way to survive through the summer in triple digit temperatures is staying indoors and cranking up the air conditioning. The summer months are equivalent to the northern states’ winter. There is a sacrifice to live in Paradise 330 days a year and its summer heat.
Here are a few ways to stay cool and alive in the desert heat this summer.
1. Stay inside during the hottest part of the day. When it hits high noon, hit the air conditioning.
2. Time your outdoor activities. Make sure your outdoor activities are done by sunrise.
3. Wear light color clothing, use lots of sunscreen and make sure you wear sunglasses.
4. Stay hydrated, drink lots and lot of water.
5. Park your car under a tree even if you have to walk a little further.
6. Make sure your pets have adequate shade, cool water for drinking and swimming.
