Sometimes the biggest challenge of putting together a space isn’t trying to find all new coordinating pieces, but working with what is already there.
Such was the case with the living room that designer Erica Lugbill was tasked with redoing. Her clients had already collected several pieces but needed help pulling it together to create a cohesive look.
Combining found and previously-owned pieces in a home is not only an affordable approach to design, but it creates a layered, collected look — a vibe that Lugbill says fit with her couple’s aesthetic.
“They were a fun, young couple with great taste,” she said. “Their style is a fun combination of bohemian and eclectic with classic pieces added to the mix.”
The challenge:
Lugbill’s biggest task was decorating with her clients’ current pieces and filling holes to tie the entire room together.
“I spent a lot of time searching for accent pieces and fabrics that spoke to each other,” she said.
Her tactic is something that other homeowners can mimic, because for most people, buying an entire new set of furniture and accessories for a living room isn’t possible.
“Start with your existing belongings,” Lugbill suggests. “Select a few items that you really love to build a room off of. Whether it is a shape, color or pattern — take inspiration from that and use it as a starting point.”
For example, Lugbill worked with a chair that had been in the clients’ family for awhile. She stained the legs of the classic wingback a deep espresso brown and paired it with charcoal velvet fabric and light cording to make the heirloom relevant again. Pairing the chair with an abstract piece of art made the look a little unexpected.
