Along the border of Scottsdale, Arizona, to the central and southwest, is the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community. Visitors can learn the fascinating history of the Pima and Maricopa people at the Hoo-Hoogam Ki Museum. Hoo-Hoogam Ki, which loosely translated means House of Those Who Have Gone is completely constructed of Adobe and desert plants and offers a wide variety of historical artifacts, antique photography, art along with the occasional local artist demonstration. Visitors can also try Native American foods in the museum dining area which makes this an education and entertaining way to learn about the local Native American populations. The Talking Stick Golf club offers spectacular greens with even more spectacular desert views of the surrounding mountains. With clear blue skies and deep greens, the golf club is a treat to the eye and the sport. The community also offers two casinos: Casino Arizona at Talking Stick and Casino Arizona at McKellips. Both places have great restaurants, live entertainment and full casino action. There’s more to Scottsdale, Arizona than meets the eye. It might surprise you to know that we are wine-makers in this part of the United States, and we are proud to tout several award-winning wines that are sure to please the palettes of the most discerning wine connoisseurs. If you are in the mood for a fabulous drive through the beautiful terrain just south of Tucson, you will end your journey at some of the finest wineries Arizona has to offer. The altitude and the soil here is ideal for growing grapes. Many vineyards offer wine-tasting, and you will also find many upscale restaurants to complement the fine wines you discover.

Stop at the delightful village of Elgin on your way. Take Interstate 10 south past Tucson to Highway 83. Follow Highway 83 to Sonoita, and at the junction of Highways 83 and 92, follow the signs east to Elgin. Along the way, a must-see destination is Patagonia which is well-known for horse-raising. If you decide to extend your stay, there are numerous bed and breakfast inns waiting expectantly for your arrival. If you choose to journey as far as the Mexican border, visit Nogales where you will find yet another delightful winery specializing in sweet, fruity vintages.

There is always something to do here in sunny Scottsdale, Arizona. If you are a person of adventurous and free-wheeling spirit, Scottsdale offers a plentitude of day trips to satisfy the most experienced traveler. Within a few short hours of Scottsdale, there are lakes and rivers for sportsmen and tourists alike. The scenery is spectacular and activities abound for all ages. Along the way, you will be delighted by an abundance of nature’s treasures as you witness Arizona’s unrivaled beauty.

So, hop in your car, turn up the tunes and head to Arizona’s West Coast for a day trip you will wish would never end. From Scottsdale take Interstate 10 West to Quartzsite, then take Arizona Highway 95 North to Parker. Parker is host to a new casino and resort. Beautiful Lake Havasu is just 45 minutes North of Parker. Here you can go swimming, boating, water-skiing, fishing or simply take in the breath-taking views. The Lake Havasu National Wildlife Refuge offers an astonishing 14,000 acres of pristine wilderness. The drive alone is worth the trip as you are treated to some of the most colorful and rugged views Arizona has to offer.

Scottsdale Fashion Week

Scottsdale is known for its Art Walks. These weekly events give locals a chance to appreciate art in every form; pottery, painting, sculpting, crafts, and the list goes on. Once per year, however, another form of art comes around with an international interest: Scottsdale Fashion Week. Paris may be the home of fashionistas and New York City may be the most obvious choice for fashion in the United States, but no city can compete with the creativity and class of the Scottsdale Fashion Week.

From November 6^th to the 9^th over fifty individual fashion shows take place across two runways. This means that for five days, a fashion show is almost always available for viewing pleasure. Down on the Scottsdale Fashion Square, there are also additional designers to meet and samples to see while the shows take place. Unlike the more recognized cities, however, where fashion shows take place behind closed doors for VIPs only, Scottsdale makes Fashion Week available for anyone who wants to take part!

I may not be of the fashion set myself, but my wife reminds me every year of the amazing opportunities that come with Fashion Week. In addition to the actual shows, purveyors of fashion, design, beauty products, wellness products and activities, and spa treatments make themselves available across the city. Fashion Week is not just about the clothes; it’s an all-body experience.

One of the things I love about Scottsdale is how much we appreciate the outdoors. A person can go to any decent-sized city and find a few malls or a couple of noteworthy stores, but Scottsdale is a place to take advantage of nature. On October 2^nd, the

Scottsdale Classic Futurity and Quarter Horse Show will be an opportunity for residents to get back to nature while appreciating a nationwide collection of unmatchable horses.

This annual show brings over a thousand horses from around the country to this one location and provides the locals with the opportunity to appreciate good breeding and well-trained horses at their very best, without leaving the comforts of their own homes. Additionally, this gives any horse rider, breeder, or admirer the opportunity to start the season off right. This show is the first event to get the season started across the nation, so everyone turns out in top form. Whether the horses are the racers that will later be entered in the Kentucky Derby or merely breeders who offspring are sold for hundreds of thousands of dollars, the best of the best in the equestrian set get their start right here in Scottsdale.

A Walk of Art

Scottsdale is not just a community of pre-existing culture. Rather, Scottsdale is a city cactus which continues to cultivate new activities and display new artwork at every opportunity. My favorite exhibition opportunity comes with the Scottsdale Art Walks. Often themed, these walks talk place every Thursday from 7pm to 9pm. Whether out with family or friends, children or adults, artists or art appreciators, the Scottsdale Art Walk is a free, fun-filled activity for everyone.

The galleries often open their doors, inviting people to see what lays in their hallowed halls. Individual artists provide street-side demonstrations of how they create, what inspires them, and what becomes of their inspiration. Entertainment abounds in the form of musicians, artists, and dancers. With over one hundred galleries within the city limits, the Scottsdale Art Walks bring about a variety of art for any admirer’s tastes.
